EU Forecast of increased Electric Cars Sales Questioned

The European Commission predicts increased sales in electric cars in a study for eco-friendly transportation. But Volvo challenges the forecast saying it’s too optimistic and unrealistic.

In an effort to build a single European transport area, the EU has drafted a white paper “that will increase mobility, remove barriers in key areas and fuel growth and employment”. At the same time, the initiative will reduce Europe’s dependence on imported oil and cut carbon emissions in transport to 60% by 2050.

Only 100 People Have Bought an Electric Car in Germany

According to the German CAR-Center Automotive Research institute, only 100 individuals have bought an electric car in 2011. In total, less than 1800 electric cars were registered in Germany during the first 11 month of this year and the majority of the cars, ironically, have been registered by the e-car manufacturers for field tests and promotional purposes.

It is way below the expected figure and the Research institute is worried that not enough is being done to encourage acceptance of electric cars in German people.

Apparently GM is not happy with the thought that Nissan Leaf is the best selling green car on their own home soil. As we discovered from the recent electric car sales stats, GM is selling fewer Volts compared to the Leafs.

What would you do if you were a business in such a situation? Devise a clever marketing plan? No, GM have decided to greatly increase the output of the manufacture line – they plan to make 5,000 units of Chevy Volt as of January 2012.
